Internal Affairs is an offbeat look at state and local politics. This week's items were written by John Woolfolk, Jeremy C. Owens, Tracy Seipel and Julia Prodis Sulek. Send tips to
"Speaking of Chu, he now has two challengers to his re-election bid: Tam Truong, 30, a city police detective friendly with Mayor Chuck Reed; and Rafael Sabic, 43, a neighborhood commissioner. Oliverio, whose initial bid for office was managed by Fedor, also has a re-election challenger: attorney Steve Kline, 62. So far, no one has filed papers indicating plans to challenge Councilman Ash Kalra and Councilwoman Rose Herrera."
New hats in ring to replace Pyle at District 10 post
The scramble to replace San Jose's termed-out District 10 Councilwoman Nancy Pyle widened last week with the entry of Denelle Fedor, chief of staff to District 6 Councilman Pierluigi Oliverio. Fedor, 41, a former council aide to former Vice Mayor Pat Dando and Santa Clara County Supervisor Ken Yeager, has moonlighted as the president and founder of the Friends of the San Jose Mounted Unit -- a role in which she has clashed with City Manager Debra Figone over cuts threatening police horses.
Edesa Bitbadal, 40, planning commissioner and former chief of staff to Councilman Kansen Chu whose interest in running had been known for months, also filed papers last week declaring her intent to run.
Also new to the race is Brian O'Neill, 58, a deputy Santa Clara County assessor and longtime Service Employees International Union leader. He officially declared his candidacy last week, ticking off a list of backers that include Supervisor George Shirakawa Jr. and former San Jose Councilman Forrest Williams.
Handling O'Neill's campaign is San Francisco's Alex Tourk, who ran Democratic Rep. Jackie Speier's congressional campaign. He has worked for former Assemblyman Lou Papan and former San Francisco mayors Willie Brown and Gavin Newsom. IA readers may recall Tourk as perhaps the Bay Area's best-known cuckold: He resigned as Newsom's re-election campaign manager in 2007 after he found out his wife had an affair with Newsom.
But enough about history! Also in the D10 dogpile are Robert Braunstein, 53, longtime sports announcer for Cal-Hi Sports Bay Area; Robert Shepard, 66, a former city elections commissioner; and Johnny Khamis, 41, a financial adviser.
Speaking of Chu, he now has two challengers to his re-election bid: Tam Truong, 30, a city police detective friendly with Mayor Chuck Reed; and Rafael Sabic, 43, a neighborhood commissioner.
Oliverio, whose initial bid for office was managed by Fedor, also has a re-election challenger: attorney Steve Kline, 62. So far, no one has filed papers indicating plans to challenge Councilman Ash Kalra and Councilwoman Rose Herrera. However, there's still time.
The nomination period for the June primary doesn't close until March 9.
